What Shinchan is

Shin-chan, written in English as Crayon Shin-chan, is a long-running Japanese comedy anime about Shinnosuke Nohara, a mischievous five-year-old, and his family and friends in the Kasukabe area. It is based on a manga and has run for decades, so there are well over two thousand television episodes counted across all services, according to JustWatch, plus a long line of annual feature films.

In India the character is simply called Shinchan, and the show is mostly known through its Hindi dub. It is a comedy built around everyday family and school situations, and each episode stands mostly on its own, so you do not need to start from a particular point.

The Hindi dub story

According to fan-maintained dubbing wikis, the Hindi dub first aired on Hungama TV on 19 June 2006 under a licence held by Spacetoon India. The same sources say it was pulled around 2008 after objections about content, and that a heavily edited version returned on 27 March 2009 together with Tamil and Telugu dubs. These are community-written pages, not official statements, so treat the exact dates with care. The sources also disagree on some later years.

A newer chapter is on Sony YAY!. Wikipedia reports that Shinchan premiered on the channel in May 2024, and the channel's infobox lists eight languages including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Bengali and Odia. Fan sources add that Sony YAY! has also aired Shinchan films in several Indian languages, and that some dubs use different voice casts from the older Hungama versions. We have not watched any of these and cannot comment on dub quality.

Films have their own history. Fan databases list Hindi-dubbed films that aired on Hungama TV, such as Villain aur Dulhan and the Buri Buri Kingdom film, and a run of newer films on Sony YAY! from 2024 onward.

How to check availability yourself

Catalogues change, so confirm before you subscribe. For TV, open the Sony YAY! or Hungama TV schedule on your cable, DTH or the channel's own website and look for Shinchan. If your set-top box supports multiple audio tracks, check the audio option for Hindi.

For streaming, search for Shinchan inside the JioHotstar or Vi Movies & TV app. Open an episode, tap the audio or language icon during playback, and see whether Hindi is listed. A listing on a comparison site such as JustWatch tells you the show exists on a service, not which audio tracks it carries. Skip unofficial uploads on video sites; they exist but we do not recommend them, because they are usually uncredited and may be removed at any time.

What to know before you start

Shinchan is a very large series. JustWatch counts about 2,788 episodes across 11 listed seasons, and the Indian apps show different slices of that, so the season numbering in an app may not match what you saw on TV. Episodes are short and mostly self-contained, which makes it easy to dip in anywhere.

The humour is aimed at older children and adults as much as kids, and Indian broadcasts have been edited in the past, so what you see on TV may differ from the original. We did not find an official age rating we could cite, so please check the rating shown on the platform. Because Hindi availability depends on the platform and the season, the safest approach is to test a single episode first.
