Roofman (2025)

Roofman 2025: a true-story crime comedy

Roofman 2025 is an American crime comedy-drama directed by Derek Cianfrance, a filmmaker known for intimate, emotionally heavy stories such as Blue Valentine. Here he works in a lighter register on a true story: Jeffrey Manchester, a former Army veteran who became known for robbing fast-food restaurants by entering through their roofs, which is where the title comes from.

The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on 6 September 2025 and is listed at 126 minutes. Its screenplay is credited to Cianfrance and Kirt Gunn, building on an earlier script by David Stephens and Peter Petrucci.

It is a story of a man who is both a criminal and a struggling father, and the film's stated setup suggests its comedy comes from the absurdity of his hiding place.

Cast and crew

Channing Tatum plays Jeffrey Manchester, while Kirsten Dunst plays Leigh Wainscott, a single mother. The supporting cast is deep: Peter Dinklage, LaKeith Stanfield, Juno Temple, Ben Mendelsohn, Uzo Aduba, Emory Cohen and Tony Revolori all appear.

Producers include Jamie Patricof, Lynette Howell Taylor, Alex Orlovsky, Duncan Montgomery and Dylan Sellers. We have not watched the film and do not assess performances here.

Things worth knowing before you press play

Some context for viewers outside the United States. Roofman is an English-language film, so dubbing and subtitle options depend on the platform you use. The events it draws on took place around the late 1990s and early 2000s, and the film adapts them for drama, which means individual scenes may differ from the real record.

The tone is the interesting part. Instead of a tense heist film, the setup points to a gentle, human comedy about a man living out of sight in a toy store while trying to stay connected to his children. If you are looking for fast action, adjust expectations; if you like character-driven stories with a streak of absurdity, this is closer to what is on offer.

Who it suits

Roofman should appeal to viewers who like heist-adjacent stories with warmth rather than violence, and to those who follow Channing Tatum beyond action roles. If you enjoy real-life oddities that play out like fiction, the premise is a good match.
