Pati Patni Aur Woh (2019)

Pati Patni Aur Woh 2019: a remake worth knowing the background of

Pati Patni Aur Woh 2019 is a Hindi romantic comedy written and directed by Mudassar Aziz. It remakes the 1978 film of the same name, which B. R. Chopra made from a story by Kamleshwar; Kamleshwar again receives the story credit here. If you know the original only by its title, the new version moves the setting to present-day small-city Uttar Pradesh.

The announced premise is simple. A young government engineer in Kanpur feels bored in his marriage and finds himself attracted to another woman. As he tries to manage both situations, the story travels between Kanpur, Lucknow and Delhi. We have not watched the film, so we are describing the set-up and the credits, not how well the jokes land.

The film was released in cinemas on 6 December 2019, and Wikipedia lists a 126-minute running time, which is fairly brisk for a mainstream Hindi comedy.

Cast, crew and music

Kartik Aaryan plays the engineer Abhinav, nicknamed Chintu. Bhumi Pednekar plays his wife Vedika, and Ananya Panday plays Tapasya, the woman he becomes interested in. Aparshakti Khurana, K. K. Raina, Rajesh Sharma and Navni Parihar fill out the family and friends, and Kriti Sanon is credited in a special appearance. Jimmy Shergill is listed as narrator.

Producers are Bhushan Kumar, Renu Ravi Chopra, Juno Chopra and Krishan Kumar, under T-Series and B. R. Studios. The soundtrack uses several composers, including Tanishk Bagchi, Rochak Kohli, Sachet-Parampara and Tony Kakkar. Two songs are recreations of older tracks, among them a number from the film Dulhe Raja, which gives a clue to the film's pop-nostalgia tone.

Where to watch and what to expect

We could not confirm a current streaming platform for the film, so we are not naming one. Streaming rights move around, and the quickest check is the search box of the OTT service you already use, or a watch-availability site for India.

As for tone, the premise points to a light, family-friendly-adjacent farce about marriage, temptation and small lies, not a heavy drama. The cast of Kartik Aaryan and Bhumi Pednekar will interest those who liked their earlier comedy work, and viewers who remember the 1978 version can compare how the story has been updated. Reception was mixed among critics according to Rotten Tomatoes, but audience taste for this kind of comedy varies a lot.

Kanpur, Lucknow and Delhi form the map of the story, so expect a distinctly north Indian flavour in the dialogue and family scenes. If you want a sense of the style before committing, the song recreations in the soundtrack are a fair preview of its upbeat, crowd-pleasing intent.
