Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon (2003)

Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon 2003: a Rajshri romance with a three-way cast

Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon 2003 is a Hindi musical romance written and directed by Sooraj Barjatya for his family's banner, Rajshri Productions. The film follows Sanjana, a spirited young woman who does not want an arranged match. A proposal arrives for a man named Prem, and what begins as a reluctant meeting turns into a romance, complicated by a case of mistaken identity.

The film is a remake of the 1976 Hindi film Chitchor, which itself was based on a Bengali short story, Chittachakor, by Subodh Ghosh. Knowing that background helps explain the light, gentle shape of the plot: it is a story of misunderstanding and quiet affection, not of villains or big conflicts.

It was released theatrically on 27 June 2003, with Yash Raj Films handling distribution.

Cast, music and technical details

Hrithik Roshan plays Prem Kishen Mathur, Kareena Kapoor plays Sanjana and Abhishek Bachchan plays Prem Kumar. Pankaj Kapoor and Himani Shivpuri play Sanjana's parents, Reema Lagoo plays Prem Kumar's mother and Tannaz Irani plays her sister Roopa. The listed runtime is 197 minutes, so this is a long, relaxed family film.

Music is by Anu Malik with lyrics by Dev Kohli. The soundtrack was released on 10 May 2003, and K. S. Chithra sang most of the songs, with KK and Shaan voicing the male leads. Songs are central to the identity of a Rajshri film, so they deserve attention as much as the story.

Where to watch and how it was received

We did not find a reliable, current source naming the streaming service that carries this film, so we do not list one. Platform guides and your usual OTT apps are the practical way to check.

On its original release, Wikipedia says the film received negative reviews from critics and was declared a commercial failure, with a box-office figure of about 39 crore rupees given in the list of Hindi films of 2003. That context is useful for readers who find older films through nostalgia for its cast: it has its supporters, but it is not a universally loved classic. We have not watched it for this overview.

Who it is for

If you like gentle, song-heavy family romances from the early 2000s, or you are curious about Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor in a lighter register than their action and drama work, the premise fits. If you want brisk pacing, expect to be patient with a nearly three-and-a-half-hour runtime.
