Synopsis

Karthik Narayan, a timid and overlooked employee at a Mumbai construction firm, is humiliated and dismissed. Soon after, he starts getting phone calls from a voice that claims to be another Karthik. A Hindi psychological thriller from 2010 about isolation, confidence and who is really on the line.

Karthik Calling Karthik 2010: a thriller built around a phone

Karthik Calling Karthik 2010 is a Hindi psychological thriller whose hook is almost minimalist: a man, a telephone and a voice that shares his name. The hero, Karthik Narayan, works in a Mumbai construction company where nobody takes him seriously. After a public humiliation and the loss of his job, mysterious calls begin, and the caller seems to know exactly what he needs to hear.

That setup is why the film is often discussed as a character study before it is a thriller. The suspense depends less on chases or twists you can see coming from a distance and more on a question the title already hints at: who is talking to Karthik, and what do they want from him? We deliberately leave the answer out.

It was directed and written by Vijay Lalwani and produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar for Excel Entertainment.

Release date, runtime and where to watch

The film opened in Indian cinemas on 26 February 2010. Sources differ slightly on length: Wikipedia and Time Out list 135 minutes, while Box Office Mojo and Rotten Tomatoes round to about 2 hours 15 minutes, and a technical listing shows 2 hours 14 minutes 44 seconds. We use 135 minutes.

We did not find a reliable, current source for which streaming service carries it, so we are not naming one. Because catalogues change, searching the title on a platform guide such as JustWatch or on your usual OTT apps is the quickest route.

Cast, crew and music

Farhan Akhtar plays Karthik, Deepika Padukone plays Shonali Mukherjee, and Ram Kapoor and Shefali Shah appear as Kamath and Dr. Shweta Kapadia. Vivan Bhatena plays Ashish. Cinematography is by Sanu Varghese.

The soundtrack is by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy with lyrics by Javed Akhtar, and the background score credits go to MIDIval Punditz and Karsh Kale. A thriller with a music team better known for lively film albums is an interesting pairing, and worth noticing when you watch.

What to know before you press play

We have not watched the film for this overview, so we offer no verdict on the performances. What can be said from the premise is that it centres on loneliness and self-doubt, and that its thrills come from the mind rather than from action. Viewers who want a quiet, dialogue-led suspense story, and who do not mind a mostly single-location mood, are the natural audience. Those expecting a loud, effects-heavy thriller should adjust expectations accordingly.

Who will enjoy Karthik Calling Karthik?

  • Fans of psychological thrillers that rely on mood
  • Viewers curious about Farhan Akhtar and Deepika Padukone in a darker setting
  • Anyone who likes a premise driven by a single mystery
