Synopsis
Genius is a 2018 Hindi action thriller with a romance thread. A brilliant engineering student and a rival classmate share a complicated bond, and years later the man is drawn into India's intelligence world on a personal mission against a dangerous enemy.
Genius 2018 in one look
Genius 2018 is a Hindi action thriller directed by Anil Sharma, and it is best known as the acting debut of his son Utkarsh Sharma. Wikipedia and IMDb give its Indian release as 24 August 2018; the streaming service ZEE5 lists 23 August, so a one-day difference exists between sources. It is a long film by Hindi standards, with a runtime of 165 minutes on Wikipedia.
This is a background guide for a film that has been out for years, written without having watched it ourselves, so we describe what is reported and offer context rather than a verdict.
The setup
The story follows Vasudev Shastri, a RAW agent, and mixes two timelines. In one, he is a standout student at an engineering college, where a rivalry with classmate Nandini Chauhan turns into romance. In the other, he is an adult in the intelligence service, pulled into a personal mission against an ISI agent known as Samar Khan or MRS.
Sources describe the plot in different levels of detail, and some summaries reveal how it ends, so we keep to the opening premise. If the idea of a campus love story fused with spy-thriller action sounds appealing, that is the design the filmmakers appear to have gone for.
Cast and crew
Utkarsh Sharma plays Vasudev, and Ishita Chauhan plays Nandini. Nawazuddin Siddiqui is listed as the ISI agent Samar Khan, Mithun Chakraborty as NSA chief Jaishankar Prasad, Ayesha Jhulka as Nandini's mother and Malti Chahar as the RAW agent Rubina.
Anil Sharma wrote the story and dialogue, with a screenplay credit to Sunil Sirvaiya and Amjad Ali. The film was produced under Anil Sharma Productions and Soham Rockstar Entertainment, and the songs are by Himesh Reshammiya with a background score from Monty Sharma, per Wikipedia. Budget figures vary between versions of the Wikipedia page, so we leave them out.
Controversy, where to watch, and who it suits
One listing notes a controversy over the film showing Lahore's Arfa Technology Park as the ISI headquarters; we mention it only as reported context. ZEE5 has a details page for the film, but we did not verify whether it is currently streaming there, so check a live listing.
If you like loud, large-canvas Hindi action with a romantic backstory, and you enjoy seeing Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Mithun Chakraborty in a mainstream thriller, it fits that appetite. If you prefer realistic espionage or compact running times, set expectations accordingly.
