Drishyam 2 (2022)

Where Drishyam 2 2022 fits in the series

Drishyam 2 2022 is a Hindi crime thriller directed by Abhishek Pathak. It does two jobs at once: it continues the story of the 2015 Hindi film Drishyam, and it is a Hindi adaptation of the 2021 Malayalam film Drishyam 2, whose story and original script came from Jeethu Joseph. Wikipedia notes that Pathak took over direction after Nishikant Kamat died in 2020.

The set-up, stripped of spoilers, is that a family man and the people close to him are trying to live quietly after a crisis in their past. Then investigators reopen a case, and secrets they thought were buried begin to move. That is as far as we will go. The pleasure of this kind of film depends on not knowing where the pressure comes from.

We have not watched it for this page, so what follows is a guide to the facts and to viewing order rather than a review.

Watch order: do you need the first film?

Because the story is a direct continuation, watching the 2015 Hindi Drishyam first is the sensible route, and that also applies if you know the Malayalam originals. A sequel built on a past crisis cannot be fully felt without knowing what the crisis was, and we will not describe it here to avoid spoiling the earlier film for newcomers.

If you have seen the 2021 Malayalam Drishyam 2, the Hindi version is described as a remake of it, so the broad story will be familiar. Fans of remakes often watch for how a script is adjusted for a new language and audience, which gives even a known plot something to look at.

Producers are Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, Kumar Mangat Pathak and Abhishek Pathak, under Panorama Studios, Viacom18 Studios and T-Series. The running time is given as 142 minutes, and a news headline cited by Wikipedia reports that the CBFC passed it as U/A without cuts.
