Border 2 (2026)

Border 2 2026: what the sequel sets out to do

Border 2 2026 is a Hindi-language war film and the sequel to J. P. Dutta's 1997 Border. Where the original is remembered for one battle in the Longewala sector, the sequel widens its scope to the 1971 war across three services. The core idea, as described in the film's Wikipedia entry, is a trio of former academy classmates who ended up in the Army, the Air Force and the Navy.

That structure lets the film move between land, air and sea rather than staying in one location, and it gives each lead a separate arc. Their wives are also part of the cast list, which suggests the home front gets screen time alongside the battlefield.

The film is directed by Anurag Singh, who co-wrote the screenplay with Sumit Arora, and the story credit goes to Nidhi Dutta.

Release date, runtime and where to watch

Border 2 opened in Indian cinemas on 23 January 2026, ahead of the Republic Day long weekend. The runtime is listed at 201 minutes, a little over three hours and twenty minutes, and the CBFC is reported to have cleared it without cuts, though we did not find the certificate category in the sources we read.

For home viewing, Netflix holds the streaming rights and the film was listed as arriving there on 20 March 2026, about eight weeks after its cinema release. Confirm availability in your region before you plan a viewing.

Cast, crew and the music

Sunny Deol, who was in the 1997 film, returns as Lt Col Fateh Singh Kaler. Varun Dhawan plays Maj Hoshiar Singh Dahiya, Diljit Dosanjh plays Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon and Ahan Shetty plays Lt Cdr Mahendra Singh Rawat. Mona Singh, Sonam Bajwa, Medha Rana and Anya Singh play their wives.

Producers are J. P. Dutta, Nidhi Dutta, Bhushan Kumar and Krishan Kumar. The songs are credited to several composers, including Anu Malik, Mithoon and Sachet-Parampara, with the lead single Ghar Kab Aaoge released on 2 January 2026. The mix of old and new composers fits the film's link to its predecessor, whose songs are still widely remembered.

Box office talk and what to expect

Several outlets describe the film as a hit, but their worldwide figures differ (reports we saw range from about 400 to 450 crore rupees), so we do not quote a number. We have not watched the film, so we make no claim about its quality either.

What you can expect from the setup is a large-scale, patriotic war drama with a long running time. It will suit viewers who liked the first Border, enjoy ensemble war stories and are ready for a three-hour-plus sitting.
