Synopsis
A Hindi vigilante drama in which three young men meet at an anti-corruption rally and become friends. Two start an online show exposing wrongdoing in their city, while one grows more driven to fight corruption through masked, hands-on vigilante action.
Bhavesh Joshi Superhero 2018: a grounded take on the vigilante story
Bhavesh Joshi Superhero 2018 arrived in an Indian cinema landscape that had few homegrown superhero stories, and it chose not to follow the comic-book route. Instead it asks what a masked crusader might look like in an Indian city fed up with corruption, where the real problems are municipal and political rather than cosmic.
As summarised in public sources, the story begins with three friends who meet at an anti-corruption rally. Two run an online show that names and shames wrongdoing, and one gradually leans toward direct vigilante action. That slow shift from protest to violence is the part to watch for, since the film is positioned as an action drama as much as a superhero tale.

Cast, crew and the Phantom Films connection
Vikramaditya Motwane directed and co-wrote the script with Anurag Kashyap and Abhay Koranne. Phantom Films produced it, with Vikas Bahl, Madhu Mantena and Kashyap credited as producers. Motwane is also known for Udaan and Lootera, so this was a sharp turn into genre territory.
Harshvardhan Kapoor leads as Sikander Khanna, also known as Siku, and the masked persona. Priyanshu Painyuli plays Bhavesh Joshi, and Ashish Verma plays Rajat. Nishikant Kamat appears in the cast; Wikipedia notes this was his last film appearance before his death in August 2020.
Siddharth Diwan is credited with cinematography, Nitin Baid with editing and Amit Trivedi with music. Wikipedia describes the critical reception as mixed, which is worth knowing if you are deciding on expectations.
Release, runtime and where to watch
The film was released theatrically in India on 1 June 2018. It was also shown at the Neuchatel International Fantastic Film Festival and selected for the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival, according to Wikipedia. Netflix premiered it on 16 August 2018; check Netflix's current catalogue, because streaming rights change over time.
The runtime is listed as 153 minutes on Wikipedia, while other databases give figures between about 154 and 166 minutes, so allow for a long sit of roughly two and a half hours. We did not find a verified certificate.
It suits viewers who want a darker, more realistic Indian action drama and are comfortable with a slow-burn build. If you expect a bright, cape-and-quips superhero film, the premise points elsewhere.
Who will enjoy Bhavesh Joshi Superhero?
