Synopsis
A rustic black comedy-drama set in a small Kerala town, where gossip, suspicion and secrets travel faster than the truth. Director Senna Hegde returns to the Kanhangad region for a story built around voyeurism and how quickly a rumour can take hold of a community.
Avihitham 2025: what kind of comedy it is
Avihitham 2025 is a Malayalam black comedy-drama; the title is usually translated as illicit. According to Wikipedia, which quotes a Times of India description, it is a quirky, rustic comedy about voyeurism and secrets, centred on small-town gossip and how fast rumours spread. That makes the humour social rather than slapstick: the laughs come from a community's habits of watching and judging.
It is a short film, listed at 106 minutes, which suits a story built from incident and character rather than plot machinery. If you enjoy local-flavour Malayalam comedies where the setting is a character in itself, this is the sort of film the premise points towards, though we have not seen it ourselves.
Director, cast and producers
Senna Hegde directs and co-wrote the screenplay with Ambareesh Kalathera. The Hollywood Reporter India framed the project as his return to Kanhangad, the region where his earlier work was set. The cast is led by Unni Raj with Renji Kankol, Vrinda Menon, Dhanesh Koliyat, Rakesh Ushar and Vineeth Chakyar in an ensemble.
E4 Experiments, Imagin Cinemas and Marley State of Mind produced, with Mukesh R. Mehta, Harris Desom, P. B. Anish, C. V. Sarathi and Senna Hegde as producers. Cinematography is credited to Sreeraj Raveendran and Ramesh Mathews, editing to Sanath Sivaraj and music to Sreerag Saji. Kerala distribution was by E4 Experiments.
Release date and where to watch
Avihitham opened in the GCC on 9 October 2025 and in India on 10 October 2025. Wikipedia lists a JioHotstar streaming debut on 14 November 2025, and a Digit listing carries the same date. Regional availability can differ, so check the app.
The film suits viewers who like Malayalam comedies rooted in village life, anyone curious about Senna Hegde's work, and those who prefer a brisk running time. It may be less satisfying for people who want a plot-driven thriller, since the premise stresses atmosphere and social behaviour over twists.
A note on tone
Subject matter such as voyeurism can sound heavier than the film is described to be; the available descriptions stress comedy and quirk, with the theme used to look at a community rather than to shock. Even so, the title means illicit and the premise involves secrets, so adult viewers are the intended audience.
