Synopsis
A homemaker from Nanded comes to Hyderabad to look after her pregnant sister. Her anxiety makes the daily metro ride difficult, and there she crosses paths with a reserved banker. Their slow friendship, set against the city's rush, is the heart of this quiet Hindi drama.
8 A.M. Metro 2023: a small-scale city romance worth knowing about
8 A.M. Metro 2023 is a Hindi-language drama written and directed by Raj Rachakonda. It follows two people who would never normally meet: Iravati, a homemaker who has travelled from Nanded to Hyderabad, and Preetam, a banker who keeps most of himself private. Their paths cross on the morning metro, and the film is built around that shared commute rather than around big plot machinery.
The story is described as an adaptation of the novel Andamina Jeevitam by Malladi Venkata Krishna Murthy, according to the film's Wikipedia entry. That detail matters for expectations: this is source material about ordinary people and inner worlds, so the film leans on conversation and mood more than on twists.
We have not watched the film, so this page is an overview of what is publicly documented, not a verdict.
Cast, crew and the Gulzar connection
Gulshan Devaiah plays Preetam and Saiyami Kher plays Iravati, with Kalpika Ganesh and Umesh Kamat among the supporting names listed. Devaiah is widely known for choosing offbeat parts across Hindi cinema and streaming, and Kher has moved between Telugu, Hindi and sports-themed films; here the pairing promises a restrained, two-hander feel.
Production is credited to Studio 99, with Raj Rachakonda and Kishore Ganji as producers, and Mark K. Robin handling music. Trade coverage also reported that the poet Gulzar contributed verses to the film and that Kher recites some of them on screen. Sources differ on how many poems were involved, so we will not give a number.
If poetry-led, dialogue-driven cinema appeals to you, that detail alone is a reason to take notice.
Release date and where to watch
The film opened in Indian cinemas on 19 May 2023, with Platoon Distribution handling release. A later streaming debut is mentioned on its Wikipedia page, and one entertainment site listed ZEE5 as the platform in May 2024, but we could not confirm the current streaming home from an official source. Check the platform's catalogue in your region before planning a watch.
Those looking for who it suits: viewers who prefer observational dramas, urban loneliness stories and slow-building friendships over high-drama romance. If you want songs, comedy or spectacle, this is likely not the mood. The film's emphasis is on small gestures, shared silences and a city seen from a commuter's window.
Because the film is not built on spectacle, it is best approached with patience: treat it as a short companionable journey, and judge it by whether the two leads make their slowly forming bond believable once you see it for yourself.
