Theri (2016)

Theri 2016: what to know before you watch

Theri 2016 is a Tamil action thriller directed by Atlee, his second feature after Raja Rani, and produced by Kalaipuli S. Thanu under the V Creations banner. It was released on 14 April 2016 and runs around 157 minutes, according to Wikipedia.

Vijay stars, and the cast list shows him in more than one identity: a police officer and a man named Joseph Kuruvilla. The film is built as a mix of family drama and mass-action cinema, a combination common in big Tamil star vehicles, so expect emotional scenes about a father and daughter alongside the larger action beats.

The opening stretch, as summarised by reference sources, is quiet: a bakery in Kerala, a young girl and her teacher. How that calm gets broken is where the story really starts, and it is best discovered while watching.

Cast and crew

Samantha Ruth Prabhu plays Mithra and Amy Jackson plays Annie, the teacher. Child actor Nainika plays the daughter, Nivedhitha. Radhika Sarathkumar, Prabhu and Mahendran appear in key supporting roles.

Music is by G. V. Prakash Kumar. The story and screenplay are credited to Atlee, with dialogues by Atlee and S. Ramana Girivasan. As we have not watched the film for this overview, we leave performance judgements to those who have.

Things worth knowing before you press play

Theri is a mainstream star vehicle, so it helps to know the style. Tamil commercial cinema of this kind typically blends songs, comedy, sentiment and large action scenes in a single long running time. At about two and a half hours, it is a full evening. If you are watching in Hindi-speaking regions, check whether a dubbed audio track is offered, since the original is in Tamil and the Telugu dub carried a separate title.

The film also gained fresh attention in January 2026 because of its anniversary re-release, which is a good sign that audiences still return to it. For first-time viewers, the safest approach is to go in knowing only the quiet bakery-and-school setup, and let the rest unfold. Subtitles are advisable if Tamil is not your first language.

Where to watch Theri and the 2026 re-release

Amazon Prime Video acquired the digital rights after the film's Indian theatrical run, and it later aired on Sun TV in October 2017. Availability changes by country, so check the service in your region.

Reports also say Theri returned to theatres worldwide on 15 January 2026, marking ten years since its release. The Telugu dubbed version was released as Policeodu the day after the original.
