Patriot 2026: a spy thriller built around surveillance
Patriot 2026 is a Malayalam spy thriller written and directed by Mahesh Narayanan. Its premise leans on a contemporary worry rather than a classic cross-border plot: a defence research scientist gets tangled in a secret spyware programme said to be used against the country's own citizens, and the cover-up around it keeps tightening.
That makes this a story about institutions and conscience as much as about chases. The question the premise sets up is not only who is behind the programme, but what ordinary insiders owe the public once they discover it.
Because Mahesh Narayanan both wrote and directed it, the film reflects a single authorial vision rather than a committee script, which is worth keeping in mind when judging its tone. We have not watched Patriot, so this is context, not a verdict.
Release date and where to watch
Reports say the makers first announced 23 April 2026 on Republic Day, then moved the worldwide theatrical release to 1 May 2026. The reference entry lists streaming on ZEE5 from 5 June 2026. Those dates come mainly from secondary reports and a reference page, so check the platform before you plan.
The film carries a UA 16+ certificate from the CBFC and a running time of about three hours, listed at 180 minutes, which is long for a thriller and worth planning an evening around.
Trade coverage describes it as a large-scale production, with a budget figure of around 140 crore rupees reported on the reference page, though we treat that number as unverified.
Cast and what to expect
The headline of the casting is the pairing of Mammootty and Mohanlal. Mammootty is listed as Dr. Daniel James, a Defence Research Wing officer, and Mohanlal as Colonel Rahim Naik, a retired army officer described as his closest friend. Fahadh Faasil, Kunchacko Boban, Nayanthara and Revathi are also named, along with Rajiv Menon, Darshana Rajendran and Prakash Belawadi.
Reports differ on how many years have passed since the two leads last shared the screen, with figures of 16 and 17 years appearing, so we give no number. Expect a talky, character-driven thriller where friendship and loyalty are tested by a secret.
It suits viewers who like politically aware thrillers and ensemble casts more than action spectacle. The story orbits an intelligence-flavoured defence setting, with an ex-wife, a second wife and former air-force cadets listed among the characters. Plan for a three-hour sitting.
Who will enjoy Patriot?
