Synopsis
Set in 1980s Anantapur, Narappa follows a farmer whose family is dragged into a bitter, increasingly violent fight with a powerful landowner over their land. It is the Telugu remake of the Tamil film Asuran. The film is a period action drama and it shows the pressure that land, caste and power can put on an ordinary household, with a father trying to protect his sons.
Narappa 2021: what kind of film this is
Narappa 2021 is a Telugu period drama with a strong action streak, directed by Srikanth Addala and led by Venkatesh. It is not an original story: it remakes the Tamil film Asuran (2019), which in turn drew on the novel Vekkai by Poomani. Knowing that lineage tells you a lot before you press play.
The setting is Anantapur district in the 1980s, and the conflict is about land, caste-linked power and what a family will endure to protect its children. The material is harder and more rural than a typical family drama, so how the director handles that violence-tinged canvas is the first thing worth watching.
The credits list Vetrimaaran, who made the Tamil original, for story and screenplay, so the remake follows the skeleton of a story that already has a reputation.
Release date and where to watch
Narappa skipped cinemas. It had been planned for a theatrical release on 14 May 2021, but the second COVID-19 wave pushed the makers to a digital premiere instead. It arrived on Amazon Prime Video on 20 July 2021, as part of that platform's Prime Day lineup. The CBFC cleared it with a UA certificate, and the runtime is listed at 153 minutes.
A few listing sites give 19 July, but the studio announcement and reference entries point to 20 July, so that is the date to trust. Streaming catalogues change over time, so check Prime Video in your region for current availability.
Principal photography began in January 2020 in Andhra Pradesh, with action sequences shot in Tamil Nadu; the shoot was interrupted by the pandemic and finished only in early 2021.
Cast, crew and what to expect
Venkatesh plays the title role of Narappa Reddy and Priyamani plays his wife Sundaramma. Karthik Rathnam appears as their elder son Munikanna, with Nassar, Rao Ramesh and Rajeev Kanakala in supporting parts. One supporting credit is reported differently by different sources, so we are not naming it here. Music is by Mani Sharma, cinematography by Shyam K. Naidu, and the producers are D. Suresh Babu and Kalaipuli S. Thanu.
Expect a slow-burning, grounded story rather than a glossy mass entertainer. The main interest for anyone who knows Asuran is how faithfully the remake carries over its tone, and how the lead star handles a rougher character. We have not watched the film, so we are not judging the performances. The story is set against land disputes in rural Andhra Pradesh in the 1980s, and the family at its centre is drawn from ordinary farming life.
If you plan to watch, it helps to know the film runs about two and a half hours and is built on emotion and tension more than comedy or song. Reading about the original Asuran afterwards will show how the two versions differ in setting and language, without needing any spoiler to enjoy either one. The runtime is 153 minutes.
Who will enjoy Narappa?
- Fans of rural, grounded Telugu dramas
- Viewers curious how a remake handles Asuran
- Anyone following Venkatesh in a heavier role
