Mersal 2017: what to know before you watch
Mersal 2017 is a Tamil action drama directed by Atlee, built around Vijay in three roles. The core idea is an unusual one for a mass film: a doctor famed for low fees quietly doubles as a magician-vigilante aimed at corruption inside the medical system. When he is arrested, an investigation begins to unpick who he really is.
The film arrived on 18 October 2017, coinciding with Diwali, which is the season Tamil cinema reserves for its biggest star vehicles. The CBFC passed it with a UA certificate on 16 October 2017, and the runtime is given as roughly 163 minutes, though other sources list figures up to 172.

Cast, crew and music
Vijay plays Vetrimaaran, Dr. Maaran and Vetri. S. J. Suryah is listed as Dr. Daniel Arokiyaraj, with Kajal Aggarwal, Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Nithya Menen as the leading women. Sathyaraj appears as DCP Rathnavel, Vadivelu as Vetri's assistant and Kovai Sarala as Maaran's adoptive mother.
A. R. Rahman composed both the songs and background score, G. K. Vishnu shot the film and Ruben edited it. The screenplay credits go to Atlee together with V. Vijayendra Prasad and S. Ramana Girivasan, and the production company is Thenandal Studio Limited.
If the credits tell you anything, it is that this was assembled as a big festival release: a major composer, a veteran writer from Telugu cinema and a hero in multiple avatars.
Where to watch and who it suits
Streaming rights are listed by language. The Tamil version is shown on Netflix and ZEE5, the Telugu version on YouTube and Prime Video, the Kannada one on Sun NXT and the Malayalam one on Hotstar. A Hindi-dubbed version premiered on the TV channel Dhinchaak, now Goldmines, on 13 March 2022. Catalogues rotate, so confirm which service carries it in your region.
It suits viewers who enjoy festival-season spectacle, triple-role showcases and message-driven action about public systems. If you prefer low-key realism, the heightened stagecraft of a magician-doctor may not be your taste.
Because Mersal is a few years old, plenty of viewers will already know its songs and its basic outline. If you have not seen it, the premise alone is enough to start with, and the cast list shows how heavily the story leans on multiple family and professional relationships around its central hero. Treat this as an overview, not a critic's verdict.
