29 (2026)

29 2026: a love story about being stuck at twenty-nine

The title is a number, and the film 29 2026 is built around it. This Tamil romantic drama, written and directed by Rathna Kumar, follows Sathya, who is twenty-nine, moves from job to job and is unsure what he wants from life. Beside him is Viji, an ambitious young woman preparing for the IAS civil-services exams, who needs a clear picture of the future.

The tension described in the public synopsis is not about families or rivals but about two people running on different clocks. If you are searching for the film, note that the bare title 29 is easy to confuse with other titles, so look for the Tamil release of May 2026 directed by Rathna Kumar.

Cast, crew and the filmmakers behind it

Vidhu plays Sathya and Preethi Asrani plays Vijayalakshmi, known as Viji. The listed supporting cast includes Avinash as Mani, Sindhu Shyam as Viji's mother and Prem Kumar as her estranged father. The production is credited to Karthik Subbaraj through Stone Bench Creations, together with Kaarthekeyen Santhanam and Lokesh Kanagaraj of G Squad.

Sean Roldan composed the music, and the six-track soundtrack came out on 6 May 2026, with singles including Seelay Seelay and Poo Paadal. Cinematography is by Madhesh Manickam. Having established names in Tamil cinema as producers is a useful signal of the film's backing, though it tells us nothing about how the finished film turned out.

Release date and where to watch

According to Wikipedia, 29 was released in theatres on 8 May 2026 and has a listed runtime of 137 minutes; another aggregator gives a longer figure, so treat the exact number as approximate. Netflix reportedly acquired the digital rights and began streaming it on 5 June 2026. Check Netflix in your region for current availability.

We have not watched the film and are not offering a verdict. It suits viewers who like quiet, character-driven Tamil romances about ordinary career and relationship anxieties, and probably not those looking for songs-and-spectacle entertainment.

The film arrived with a notable producer line-up and a Netflix release a few weeks after theatres, which suggests it was positioned as a quieter, word-of-mouth title instead of a spectacle. For viewers outside Tamil Nadu, checking for subtitles is a good first step, since the story leans on conversation and small emotional beats, not on action or big set pieces.
