Sardar (2022)

Sardar 2022: a spy thriller built around water

Sardar 2022 is a Tamil-language spy action film directed by P. S. Mithran, starring Karthi in a dual role. The premise, as described in reference sources, is that a spy who was disgraced and spent years away returns to stop the launch of a water company that poses a threat to the country.

What makes that setup interesting is the choice of villain. Instead of a bomb or a border, the stakes are a basic resource, and the story asks how the control of drinking water can become a weapon. It is a more topical hook than most spy films use, and it gives the action a social argument to sit on.

We have not watched the film, so this is an overview, not a review. We describe only what the makers and reference pages have established and leave the verdict to you.

Release date and where to watch Sardar

Sardar was released in theatres on 21 October 2022, positioned ahead of Diwali. Wikipedia lists a runtime of about 165 minutes, with 166 minutes cited after censor certification. For streaming, trade press reported the Tamil and Telugu versions arriving on Aha from 18 November 2022.

Platform deals change, so if you are watching now, search the title on your preferred service and confirm the language track before starting. A sequel, Sardar 2, is listed on Wikipedia, but we did not verify its status and it is not part of this page.

Cast and crew: Karthi, Raashii Khanna and P. S. Mithran

Karthi carries the film in a dual role, supported by Raashii Khanna, Rajisha Vijayan, Chunky Panday and Laila, among others. P. S. Mithran directs and is credited among the writers; S. Lakshman Kumar produces under Prince Pictures, and G. V. Prakash Kumar composed the music.

A dual role in a spy film invites the question of how the two characters differ, and how much of the story depends on contrast between them. We will not guess at plot details, but it is worth watching for how the film distinguishes the two, through performance, costume and tone.

What to expect and who will enjoy it

Expect a festival-season action thriller of roughly two hours forty-five minutes, so it is a commitment. It should suit viewers who like Tamil mass-entertainers with a message attached, and those who follow Karthi's career. If you prefer lean, quiet spy dramas, the length and scale may not be your style.
