Overdrive (2017)

Overdrive 2017: a car-thief thriller in brief

Overdrive 2017 is an English-language action thriller about two half-brothers, Andrew and Garrett Foster, who specialise in stealing high-end collector cars. The story is set on the Cote d'Azur during the season when classic and luxury cars change hands at auction, a backdrop that gives the film its glossy, sun-washed look. The brothers are hired to steal a crime lord's luxury car, and the job, as the premise goes, proves bigger than expected.

It is a straightforward heist-and-chase premise rather than an ambitious character study, and it is easier to enjoy when approached on those terms. We have not watched it for this page, so what follows is background and expectations, not a verdict.

Cast, crew and the Fast and Furious link

Antonio Negret directed from a script by Michael Brandt and Derek Haas, a writing pair credited with 2 Fast 2 Furious, which explains the film's leaning toward street-racing style thrills. Scott Eastwood plays Andrew and Freddie Thorp plays Garrett. Ana de Armas appears as Stephanie, Gaia Weiss as Devin, Simon Abkarian as the crime boss Jacomo Morier and Clemens Schick as Max Klemp.

Production credits point to a French, Belgian and American collaboration, with Paramount Pictures handling US distribution. Wikipedia lists a running time of 93 minutes, while some French and Italian listings say 96, so treat the runtime as roughly an hour and a half.

Release date, where to watch and who it suits

According to Wikipedia, Overdrive opened in France on 16 August 2017 and reached select US theaters, on-demand and digital platforms on 6 October 2017. We could not confirm which streaming service currently carries it in India, so please check a live availability tracker before searching; rental and purchase platforms are the likelier route for a title like this than a subscription catalogue.

It suits viewers who enjoy light, fast heist films in the vein of the franchises its writers are known for, and who care more about locations and cars than depth of plot. If you want tightly plotted crime drama, expectations should stay modest.

A practical tip: because listings disagree slightly on running time and because the film is a modest-scale European-American co-production rather than a franchise tentpole, it helps to read the platform's own details page before renting. Pair it with the writers' earlier racing film if you want a sense of where its tone comes from, and keep the focus on pace and scenery.
