Good Fortune 2025: Aziz Ansari's directorial debut

Good Fortune 2025 is an English-language comedy that marks Aziz Ansari's first feature as director; he also wrote it and appears in it. The set-up, according to reports, is a guardian-angel story with a twist: the angel, Gabriel, is well-meaning but not very competent, and his interference lands on two men from opposite ends of the economic ladder.

Those two men are a struggling gig worker and a rich venture capitalist. Putting an angel between them is a gentle way into questions about money, work and what people think they deserve. Comedies built on that kind of premise live or die on tone, which is why Ansari's background as a stand-up and sitcom performer is the obvious thing to watch.

The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on 6 September 2025 and opened in US theatres on 17 October 2025 through Lionsgate; Indian entertainment press reported the same date for India. Lionsgate scheduled a digital release in the US from 7 November, with Blu-ray and DVD on 9 December 2025.

Cast: Keanu Reeves, Seth Rogen and Keke Palmer

Keanu Reeves plays the angel Gabriel, Seth Rogen the venture capitalist, and Ansari himself the gig worker. Keke Palmer and Sandra Oh also star.

The casting of Reeves is the notable choice. He is often associated with action and with a calm, sincere screen persona, and an earnest, slightly lost angel is a role that could suit that persona, though we cannot say how well it plays. Rogen's comic reputation is the counterweight.

Who it suits

It should suit viewers who enjoy dialogue-led English comedies with a light fantasy layer, and fans of Ansari's earlier television work. If you want broad slapstick or a heavy plot, expect something gentler and more about ideas.

The film's central pairing, a gig worker and a venture capitalist, also gives it a topical edge for anyone who has followed conversations about app-based work and wealth gaps. We cannot say how sharply it handles them, but the premise suggests the angel plot is a vehicle for social comedy rather than a pure fantasy. English subtitles and a quiet evening are all you need; no prior knowledge of Ansari's earlier work is required.
