As Wikipedia tells it, the project was first announced in September 2023 under the working title Thalaivar 171, and the name Coolie was revealed in April 2024. Lokesh Kanagaraj wrote and directed it, with Chandhru Anbazhagan credited as co-writer of the screenplay. The director has said the script dates back to 2015 and was reworked in late 2023 once Rajinikanth showed interest.

The broad setup reported is a former coolie union leader who looks into the death of a friend and ends up facing a dangerous crime syndicate. We stop there on purpose. Production is reported to be Sun Pictures with Kalanithi Maran as producer, and the film is described as a very expensive one, with budget estimates in the hundreds of crores that we cannot verify.

Shoot, certificate and reception

Credits listed on Wikipedia include Girish Gangadharan as cinematographer, who replaced Manoj Paramahamsa, and Philomin Raj as editor. Principal photography is reported to have run from July 2024 to March 2025, mostly in Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam, with other stretches in Chennai, Jaipur and Bangkok. The running time is about 170 minutes.

The Indian censor board reportedly gave the film an A certificate, meaning adults only, and a court appeal by the producers for a lower category was reported as dismissed. That matters if you plan a family outing: this is positioned as a violent crime-action film. Reception is described as mixed, and the same source calls it the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2025, although the totals quoted vary widely between outlets.
